Don't know all the details yet...but someone died this morning in Freeport on a paving job. 18 wheeler ran them over. I mark out on jobs like this alot...following the pavers atop hot asphalt. My heart goes out to whom ever was struck & I hope we didnt loose another brother or sister today💔

I just wanna say I almost died today! Thank you to all the a**holes that speed in work zones & where there's flashing lights & big trucks with blinking arrows!!
Slow the hell down really!!! I have a family I want to come home to at the end of the day not be lying in a hospital bed with 2 broken legs fighting for my life cause flaggers with bright vests in the road waving you to stay left & slow down ...flashing lights... Arrow boards..cones..isnt enough to tell you there are people working in the road.

I had to jump off the stringline today while marking out because some a**hole decides he's gonna ignore the flaggers motions to stay left & hammered around him to end up face to face with me with no room & time to get out of my way. Thank god i looked up when i did. Im marking a road my head is down. Real live people wifes husbands mothers uncles work on our roads everyday! You never know when you may have to share the road with the men & women that risk their lives daily to maintain them.
So PLEASE slow down in work zones!!

As a 1298 member can someone tell me if our employer asks us to "stand-by" at our 8am start untill 9am & then cancels your shift due to weather but sends out your crew minus 2 people are those 2 people entitled to 2hr showtime or 1? Does anyone know what our union contract states?

I truly do love my job. I love my husband & kids alot more...& they expect to see me everyday after my shift ends, to the vehicle traveling north bound on CR. 97 aka Nicolls Rd at approx 3:00am this morning...

You entered our work zone at top speeds probably in 60-80 mph range.

Our work trucks..all 4 of them were in left turn lane with lots of bright blinking lights on them. Very easy to spot at very far distances.

At this point you already passed our ROAD WORK sign & LEFT LANE CLOSED sign.

I was in the right thru lane with 2 other co workers one of which was steering a thermo cart with very very hot toxic material.

I had my night paddle out to STOP w red flashing letters...you refused to slow or stop before i could yell , "GET OUT!!" to my guys i swung my stop paddle out to my right forcing the car to jerk his vehicle more left & missed the thermo cart & our guys by only 2 ft to spare!

You carried on at top speeds past us & never slowed not for a second. We risk our lives every day out there to serve Long Islands roads...but some motorists obviously have no respect for themselves their personal property or others.

Come on people slow down...flashing lights, bright lights??? People in the road. Signs Good indication to SLOW DOWN!

With Spring 2018 nearing ahead our work force brothers & sisters will be preparing for a busy work season ahead. At this time not only do we share our road work zones with other co-workers & unions... Nys inspectors & saftey councils we share these spaces sometimes with motorists, pedestrians & bicyclists. As a 1298 laborer for 18 years through local 1298, i ask that all parties be especially careful when entering suffolk & nassau county roadways. As much as these motorists want to get home to their families us workers want to make it home to theirs as well. Be cautious upon entering work zones..loud equipment makes it difficult at times to hear emergencies occuring in the work zone. Keep eyes open at all times always scanning your immediate area for possible dangers.
Be courteous to those traveling by foot or bike. As a road worker it should be your responsibility to make sure any confused person entering or trying to cross a work zone does so safely. And motorists SLOW DOWN please for your own saftey & ours. I wish all our nys road workers a prosperous & safe fun filled work year..& to our motorists may you travel safely!
