️⃣ Ford & Dodge Muscle: Two Mustangs and two Dodge Chargers roared through the Bullitt chase scenes. Only one Mustang survived filming, and McQueen himself tried to buy it later—no luck, though!
️⃣ Mustang Mirror Clues: McQueen wasn’t the only one behind the wheel. Stunt driver Bud Ekins handled parts of the chase. Want to spot the switch? If the rearview mirror’s down, it’s McQueen. Up? That’s Ekins.
️⃣ Real Burnout Blunder: McQueen’s reverse burnout? Not scripted! He missed a turn but nailed the scene, so they kept it.
️⃣ Speed on Film: Yates called for 75–80 mph speeds, but the Mustang and Charger blasted over 110 mph, delivering some of the most intense chase footage ever!
️⃣ Volkswagen Cameo: That dark green VW Beetle? If you watch closely, it’s passed several times throughout the chase, making it a sort of unofficial “extra.”
️⃣ San Francisco Streets: The entire chase sequence took three weeks to shoot and involved closed-off streets, making Bullitt one of the first films to capture the hilly streets of San Francisco at breakneck speeds.
️⃣ Mechanical Mishap: During one scene, McQueen accidentally hit a parked car. His wife begged the director to use a stuntman after that.
️⃣ A Lasting Legacy: The Bullitt Mustang from the film resurfaced in 2018 after decades hidden away and was revealed alongside the modern 2019 Mustang Bullitt at the Detroit Auto Show!
